Dear Member Institutions and Colleagues:

As was discussed during the AWARE Webinar on October 6, 2015, and disclosed in the Memo to the field, September 2015 (Section G, p. 18), ACICS is embarking on an expanded review of Institutional Disclosures of Student Achievement data.

This review was authorized and mandated by the Council. The purpose is to provide greater focus on the accuracy, clarity and accountability of institutional disclosures outside of the regular accreditation review cycle. Data derived from this outreach activity will be collected, analyzed and presented for review by the Council.

ACICS Accreditation Criteria Section 3-1-704: Performance Information, stipulates that "Institutions shall routinely provide reliable information to the public on their performance, including student achievement as determined by the institution."

This review supports ACICS' compliance with the recognition standards of the U.S. Department of Education, which requires all accrediting agencies to perform effective and continuous quality review of institutions during and between periodic accreditation review cycles.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) requires that accrediting agencies demonstrate public accountability and provide evidence that they have implemented:

"...accreditation standards or policies that require institutions or programs routinely to provide reliable information to the public on their performance, including student achievement as determined by the institution or program." (CHEA Standard 12.B.1)

The outreach will be accomplished through an online review conducted by ACICS beginning October, 2015. It will entail the random review of several hundred member institutions each year, including the following:

  1. Website disclosure information
  2.  Publications
  3.  Advertisements

Specific disclosures to be reviewed will include:

  • On time Graduation Rates
  •  Retention and Placement Rates
  •  Licensure/Certification Pass Rates

A substantial number of school websites will be reviewed this fall. After a thorough review and analysis, schools will receive written feedback regarding how their disclosures of student achievement data meet the expectations of the Council. Schools will be afforded opportunity to respond to issues reflected in the report. The findings and responses from schools will be reviewed by Council.

For the purpose of assisting institutions to augment their current procedures to collect, verify and disclose information to students, ACICS has inventoried the landscape of student achievement disclosures made by colleges and schools, and established a guidance document entitled "ACICS Best Practices - Institutional Student Achievement Disclosure Information."

ACICS will conduct an AWARE webinar for all member institutions on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, between 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., EDT. The webinar will provide institutions with an opportunity to ask questions and to develop a deeper understanding of expectations and requirements:
